Community Spotlight: Pasadena Yacht and Country Club

We live in a beautiful part of the country. And as landscapers, Mulhern has the privilege and duty to keep it beautiful daily. There’s nothing like spending each day out in nature taking care of your landscapes.

We strive to make each home look like a country club. But at least one of our clients is a country club. Pasadena Yacht and Country Club is one of the many clients we are proud to serve and one with which you may be familiar.

For those who aren’t and would like to learn a little more, today’s Mulhern Community Spotlight features the country club and discusses what makes it unique.

Pasadena Yacht and Country Club History

While the club is full of modern luxury and amenities, it’s also steeped in the history and traditions of nearly a century. So how’d it all get started?

Founding

Even for people who don’t watch golf, two out of three of the best professional golfers of all time, as rated by several major tournaments, are household names. They are Tiger Woods (who won fifteen) and Jack Nicklaus (who won eighteen.). But the original, now-surpassed record was held by Walter Charles Hagen, “the father of professional golf.”

Likewise, a household name in his time, Hagen did much to raise the profile of professional golf and increase players’ earnings. His charming, assertive personality also broke class barriers between pro golfers and club members. Sports Illustrated and Golf Magazine ranked him the 8th greatest player of all time.

Hagan won the PGA Championship a record five times. In 1922, he was the first native-born American to win the British open. In 1924, Hagen and cofounder Jack Taylor founded the Pasadena Yacht and Country Club, calling it Pasadena on the Gulf.

Rise and Renovation

Over the years, the club has gained fame for its course and beautiful ground. It’s hosted many major PGA and LPGA events, including the “match of the century” between Hagen and BobbyJones. It also attracted many athletes from other fields during the off time, including Babe Ruth, Arnold Palmer, Babe Zacharias, and Michael Jordon.

In the 1980s, the famous pro and the namesake of a tasty nonalcoholic cocktail, Arnold Palmer, designed renovations to improve the course. When the club changed ownership in 2016, a new and ongoing round of renovations began, for which current members continue to express enjoyment and gratitude.
